How to read the IP count without being misled
Infective Propagules per gram or per ml (IP) is the number that actually matters in a mycorrhiza product — it counts the units capable of colonising a root, not merely the total biomass present. FCO 1985 sets the minimum standard for liquid VAM at 10 spores / 1,200 IP per ml. Our liquid is specified at a minimum of 100 spores / 1,200 IP per ml, and every batch is laboratory verified for infective potential.
Here is where buyers get confused. You cannot compare 6,000 IP per gram against 1,200 IP per ml directly. They are different units on different carriers with different dose rates. The only fair comparison is total infective propagules delivered per acre:
- Powder: 100 g per acre x 6,000 IP/g = 600,000 IP per acre
- Liquid: 2,500 ml per acre x 1,200 IP/ml = 3,000,000 IP per acre
The liquid therefore delivers a substantially higher propagule load per acre. That does not automatically make it the better buy — a root dip places propagules directly against the root surface where colonisation efficiency is far higher, so the powder achieves good colonisation from a smaller load. But it does mean that if you are broadcasting into soil rather than dipping roots, the liquid is the more reliable route.
Choose the liquid if
- You have drip or sprinkler irrigation. Mycorrhiza injected through drip lands exactly in the wetted root zone, which is the single most efficient delivery method available.
- You farm more than about 15 acres, so one drum covers the whole holding in a single purchase.
- Your crop is sown or planted direct rather than transplanted — cotton, sugarcane, groundnut, maize — where there is no seedling to dip.
- You are already fertigating and want to add VAM to an existing schedule without a separate operation.
Choose the powder if
- You farm under 10 acres. A single 1 Kg pack covers the season and there is no leftover drum to store.
- Your crop is transplanted — tomato, chilli, brinjal, onion, banana, papaya, nursery stock. Root dip before transplanting is the highest-efficiency application there is.
- You want to treat seed.
- Freight matters. A 1 Kg pack ships anywhere cheaply; a 50 kg drum does not.
- You flood irrigate. Broadcasting powder mixed with FYM or vermicompost holds position in soil better than a drench that flooding will move.
The rules that apply to both
These are the same for liquid and powder, and getting them wrong is the usual reason a grower reports no result:
- Never tank-mix with fungicide. Mycorrhiza is a fungus. Carbendazim, Mancozeb, Thiram and similar products will kill it. Leave 7–10 days either side.
- Apply at planting, not at flowering. Colonisation takes 2–3 weeks and requires actively growing roots. Applied late, it cannot deliver the phosphorus benefit within the crop cycle.
- Do not apply alongside a heavy DAP dose. High available phosphorus suppresses colonisation — the plant has no reason to invest in the symbiosis. This is the mechanism behind reducing DAP, so reduce it rather than stacking both.
- Keep it out of heat and sun. Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Shelf life is 18 months from manufacture.
- Step the chemical reduction down over two cycles. Our field feedback across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh indicates DAP and SSP can typically be cut 30–40% once colonisation is established, with phosphorus uptake improving 30–50% and root colonisation measured at 70% or better. Do not cut it all in the first season.
If you want mycorrhiza and NPK bacteria in one drum
Many growers run VAM alongside an NPK consortium.
