How to Apply Liquid Biofertilizer Through Drip Irrigation in India (2026): Order, Dose per Acre and Cost
Short answer: to apply liquid biofertilizer through drip, wet the root zone first, inject the diluted product for 20–30 minutes with no chlorine, acid or chemical fungicide in the line, then flush with plain water for 10 minutes. Per acre, NPK Consortia is 1 litre in about 200 L of water (roughly ₹94 at ₹4,699 per 50 L drum), and Mycorrhiza VAM Liquid is 2–3 litres (₹232–348 at ₹5,800 per 50 L drum, incl. GST).
Drip is the cheapest way to put living microbes at the root: the order of operations matters more than the dose.
Why drip works, and why it fails
Microbes only help if they reach moist soil near active roots alive. Our NPK Consortia carries a minimum of 5×10⁸ cells per ml. At 1 litre per acre that is 5×10¹¹ cells; mixed into 200 L of water it is about 2.5×10⁹ cells per litre of drip water, delivered straight to the wetted zone instead of being broadcast over bare soil. Mycorrhiza VAM Liquid is specified at a minimum of 1200 infective propagules per ml, so 2 litres puts about 2.4 million propagules on an acre.
Drip fails when the product is killed or stranded in the pipes: chlorinated water, hot midday lines, mixing with concentrated fertilizer, or injecting it at the very end so it never leaves the laterals.
The 5-step drip sequence
- Wet first (10–15 min). Run plain water so the soil around each emitter is moist and the lines are full.
- Dilute separately. Mix the dose in a clean plastic bucket or tank with about 200 L of non-chlorinated water. Do not use water that was shock-chlorinated in the last few days to clean the system.
- Inject for 20–30 minutes in the cooler part of the day: early morning or evening. Direct sun and hot lines reduce survival.
- Flush for 10 minutes with plain water so microbes move out of the laterals and into the root zone.
- Keep a gap from chemicals. Do not run it together with copper products, bactericides or chemical fungicides (Carbendazim, Mancozeb); keep 7–10 days apart. Inject urea, DAP or other concentrated fertilizer on a different day or at least after a clean flush.
Dose per acre and cost
| Product | Drip dose per acre | Approx. cost per acre per application | One 50 L drum covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| NPK Consortia | 1 L (in about 200 L water) | about ₹94 | up to 50 acres per application |
| Sugarcane Special Consortia | 2–5 L (in 100 L water, repeat monthly) | ₹188–470 | 10–25 acres |
| Mycorrhiza VAM Liquid | 2–3 L (in 200 L water) | ₹232–348 | 16–25 acres |

Which to put through drip, and when
Use NPK Consortia (Azotobacter, PSB and KMB) for nitrogen, phosphorus and potash support in sugarcane, vegetables, banana, cotton and orchards. Use Mycorrhiza VAM Liquid at transplanting or early establishment, because root colonisation takes about 2–3 weeks and applying at flowering gives little benefit. Use Sugarcane Special Consortia monthly on plant and ratoon cane.
A 10-minute check that the system is ready
- Smell and colour: a healthy liquid consortia has a mild fermented smell, not a rotten one.
- Check the batch date: our shelf life is 12–18 months from manufacture.
- Run a test with plain water: confirm every emitter drips and screens are clean before injecting.
- Mycorrhizal propagules are larger than bacterial cells; if you use very fine emitters, do a short test run first or apply VAM as a soil drench along the rows instead.
Frequently asked questions
How much biofertilizer per acre through drip?
1 litre of NPK Consortia, 2–5 litres of Sugarcane Special, or 2–3 litres of Mycorrhiza VAM Liquid, each in 100–200 L of water.
Can I mix biofertilizer with urea or DAP in the tank?
Avoid it. Concentrated salts stress microbes. Inject separately or on a different day.
Does chlorinated water kill biofertilizer?
Residual chlorine can reduce microbial survival, so use untreated water and flush chlorine-cleaned lines first.
What time of day is best?
Early morning or evening, when lines are cool and UV is low.
How often should I repeat?
NPK Consortia and Sugarcane Special are typically repeated every 30 days in the crop cycle; Mycorrhiza VAM is usually a one-time application at planting or transplanting.
