Biofertilizer for Papaya in India (2026): Mycorrhiza Dose per Acre, Cost and the Planting-Pit Schedule

Short answer: for papaya, apply Mycorrhiza (VAM) powder at 100 g per acre, or Mycorrhiza VAM Liquid at about 1 Ltr per acre, once at planting and once more 60 days later. At our current prices that is about Rs 250 per acre per application with the 1 Kg powder pack (Rs 2,499) and about Rs 116 per acre with the 50 Ltr liquid drum (Rs 5,800, i.e. Rs 116 per Ltr). Put it in moist soil around the root zone, never on dry soil and never mixed with fungicide.

One kilogram of Orgogrowth Mycorrhiza VAM powder (6,000 IP per gram) treats about 10 acres of papaya, so the biological phosphorus support costs roughly Rs 250 per acre per application.

Why papaya needs a healthy root zone

Papaya grows very fast, fruits continuously for months and has a shallow, soft root system. It is also unforgiving of waterlogging, so the roots that do exist must work hard. Mycorrhizal fungi (VAM) extend the effective root zone and help the plant take up phosphorus that is already locked in most Indian red and black soils. A better-fed root system means you can often trim DAP spending: our product page notes a 40 to 60 percent reduction in DAP use when phosphorus is supplied biologically (results vary with soil and crop).

Planting-pit schedule (November to February planting)

  1. Prepare pits about 45 cm cube, spacing near 1.8 x 1.8 m (roughly 1,200 plants per acre). Keep drainage good; papaya roots rot in standing water.
  2. Fill with topsoil and well-rotted compost. Skip fresh, hot manure in the pit.
  3. Apply VAM at transplanting: mix the acre-dose of powder (100 g) evenly with compost or sand and place it in the root zone so spores touch live roots, or drench the diluted liquid around the seedling.
  4. Water in lightly so the soil is moist but not saturated.
  5. Repeat at about 60 days as a ring application at the drip line, or through drip.
  6. Hold fungicide drenches for 7 to 10 days after VAM; they can reduce colonisation.

Where NPK Consortia fits

VAM handles phosphorus uptake and root reach. Papaya also needs steady nitrogen and potash. NPK+VAM Consortia (50 Ltr, Rs 4,699, about Rs 94 per Ltr) combines Azotobacter, PSB, KMB and Mycorrhiza in one drum. If you only need the nitrogen, phosphorus and potash bacteria, NPK Consortia is the same Rs 94 per Ltr and is listed to cut chemical NPK by 25 to 30 percent. Follow the label dose for plant age and soil.

Common mistakes in papaya

  • Planting in a pit that holds water. No biofertilizer can offset root rot from poor drainage.
  • Putting VAM on dry soil or on the leaf. It must reach roots.
  • Tank-mixing with copper or systemic fungicides.
  • Heavy DAP at the same time: very high soil phosphorus suppresses colonisation.
  • Expecting results in days. Colonisation takes about 3 weeks; look for new white feeder roots then.

FAQ

How much mycorrhiza does papaya need per acre?

100 g of VAM powder or about 1 Ltr of VAM liquid per acre per application, at planting and again near 60 days.

What does it cost per acre?

About Rs 250 per acre with the powder and about Rs 116 per acre with the liquid, at current prices including GST.

Can I apply it through drip irrigation?

Yes, the liquid can run through drip into moist soil. Flush the line with plain water afterwards.

Does it replace fertilizer?

No. It improves phosphorus uptake and root function so you can often reduce DAP, but it supplements a sound nutrient plan and does not guarantee a specific yield.

Is it FCO compliant?

Orgogrowth biofertilizers are made under FCO 1985 norms. Check the label and product page for batch details.
