How to Enrich Farmyard Manure (FYM) With Liquid Biofertilizer in India (2026): Dose per Tonne, Cost and the 15-Day Method

Short answer: to enrich one tonne (1,000 kg) of well-rotted farmyard manure (FYM), sprinkle about 10 litres of liquid biofertilizer consortia over it (roughly 1 litre per 100 kg), turn it, keep it moist and shaded for 15 days, then broadcast it. At Orgogrowth's NPK Consortia price of ₹4,699 per 50 L drum (₹94 per litre), that is about ₹940 per tonne of FYM.

Enriching FYM with a live consortia multiplies the microbes you apply per rupee, because the manure acts as a carrier and food source while the culture incubates.

Why enrich FYM instead of applying biofertilizer alone?

Plain FYM supplies organic matter and slow nutrients, but its microbial load is uneven. A liquid consortia containing Azotobacter (nitrogen), phosphate-solubilising bacteria (PSB) and potash-mobilising bacteria (KMB) colonises the heap during incubation, so what reaches the field is a microbe-rich, moist, ready-to-spread mix. Farmers who already spread FYM before sowing add no extra labour round, only one watering-can step.

What you need (per 1 tonne of FYM)

Well-rotted FYM that no longer smells of ammonia or feels hot; about 10 L of liquid consortia such as Orgogrowth NPK Consortia (50 L drum); 20 to 40 L of clean, non-chlorinated water; a shaded, covered floor or tarpaulin; and a shovel.

The 15-day method, step by step

  1. Day 0 – Check the heap. FYM must be cool to the touch. Hot, fresh manure kills bacteria. If you can hold your hand in the centre for 10 seconds, it is ready.
  2. Day 0 – Dilute and sprinkle. Mix 10 L of consortia in 20 to 40 L of water. Spread the FYM in a 15 cm layer in shade and sprinkle the mix evenly while turning with a shovel.
  3. Day 0 – Heap and cover. Make a heap about 1 m high and cover with a damp jute sack or a tarpaulin with air gaps. Never use direct sunlight.
  4. Days 3, 7, 11 – Turn and moisten. The heap should feel like a squeezed sponge: damp, but no water dripping between your fingers.
  5. Day 15 – Apply. Broadcast in the evening or on a cloudy day, and incorporate lightly or irrigate the same day.

Dose and cost at a glance

FYM quantity Liquid consortia Approx. cost at ₹94/L
500 kg 5 L ₹470
1 tonne 10 L ₹940
2 tonnes 20 L ₹1,880
1 drum (50 L) enriches about 5 tonnes ₹4,699

Always follow the dose printed on the product label if it differs; these figures are the common 1 L per 100 kg guideline for planning and budgeting.

Mycorrhiza: add it in the field, not the heap

Mycorrhiza (VAM) fungi need a living root to colonise, so they do not multiply in a compost heap. Apply Mycorrhiza VAM Liquid (₹5,800 per 50 L drum) near the root zone at sowing or planting, and use the enriched FYM alongside it. Our powder pack lists 6000 IP/gm and a 1 kg pack covers roughly 10 acres.

Crop pairings

For cane, enriched FYM with Sugarcane Special Consortia at planting suits trench application. For palms, work enriched FYM into the basin of arecanut; see Areca Special Consortia.

Five mistakes that waste the money

  • Using hot, unrotted manure.
  • Mixing consortia with chemical fungicide, urea or DAP in the same heap; keep a gap of several days.
  • Leaving the heap in direct sun or letting it dry out.
  • Using chlorinated tap water without letting it stand overnight.
  • Storing the enriched heap longer than about three weeks; use it while the culture is active.

Frequently asked questions

How much liquid biofertilizer do I need per tonne of FYM?

About 10 litres, or 1 litre per 100 kg, which costs around ₹940 with a ₹94 per litre consortia.

How long should enriched FYM incubate?

Fifteen days under shade with turning every three to four days.

Can I enrich vermicompost the same way?

Yes. Vermicompost is already stable, so a shorter 7 to 10 day incubation is usually enough.

Can I enrich FYM with mycorrhiza?

No. VAM needs live roots, so apply it at the plant and use enriched FYM as the organic base.

Is this suitable for organic farming?

Our products are FCO 1985 compliant biofertilizers. Check your certification body's rules for FYM sources.
