Biofertilizer for Cauliflower and Cabbage in India (2026): Dosage per Acre, Cost and the Rabi Schedule — and Why Mycorrhiza Is the Wrong Choice Here

The short answer

For one acre of cauliflower or cabbage, apply 5 litres of NPK Consortia liquid biofertilizer at transplanting, again at 25 days and again at 45 days after transplanting (15 litres per crop), and skip mycorrhiza on this crop. At Orgogrowth's price of Rs 4,699 per 50 Ltr drum (about Rs 94 per litre), that is roughly Rs 1,410 per acre per crop. Realistic first-season saving is a 20-25% cut in urea and DAP, taken out of the basal and first top-dress.

Quotable line: cauliflower and cabbage are non-mycorrhizal crops, so the biofertilizer that pays here is nitrogen-fixing and phosphate-solubilising bacteria, not VAM.

Most suppliers will sell you mycorrhiza for every vegetable. We will not, and the reason is below.

Why we do not recommend mycorrhiza for Brassicas

Plants in the cabbage family (Brassicaceae: cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, knol-khol, mustard, radish) are generally non-mycorrhizal hosts. They do not form the arbuscular association that Mycorrhiza VAM depends on, so a VAM dose placed near their roots has little to colonise. Spend your money on the bacterial consortium instead. Mycorrhiza is worth buying for the crop that follows or is intercropped with them (for example onion, tomato, chilli, maize), where it does colonise. Note that a heavy Brassica crop can leave soil VAM spore load lower than a legume or cereal crop would, which is another reason to dose VAM on the next, mycorrhizal crop.

What goes into the soil

Orgogrowth NPK Consortia carries a minimum of 5x108 cells per ml across three groups: Azotobacter (atmospheric nitrogen), PSB (phosphate solubilising bacteria) and KMB (potash mobilising bacteria). It is manufactured to FCO 1985 specification in an ISO 9001:2015 certified facility at Mehsana, Gujarat. A 50 Ltr drum covers about 10 acre-applications.

If you also want a mycorrhiza component for the following crop in the same field, the NPK+VAM Consortia 50 Ltr drum at Rs 4,699 combines all four organisms in one drum. For a pure Brassica crop, plain NPK Consortia is the better value.

The rabi schedule for cauliflower and cabbage

  1. Seedling dip, at transplanting: dilute 250 ml NPK Consortia in 10 litres of water and dip seedling roots for 20-30 minutes before planting. Never dip in water that has been recently chlorinated.
  2. Transplanting (Day 0): drench or drip 5 Ltr per acre into moist soil, immediately after the transplant irrigation.
  3. Day 25: 5 Ltr per acre, timed with the first top-dress of nitrogen and earthing-up.
  4. Day 45: 5 Ltr per acre, at the start of head or curd initiation. This is the application that matters most for uniform curd size, because potash and phosphorus demand peaks here.

Keep a gap of 7 days between the biofertilizer and any soil-applied fungicide or copper drench (clubroot and damping-off sprays are common in Brassicas), because these also suppress beneficial bacteria. Apply into moist soil, never dry, and keep drums below 35 degrees C and out of direct sun.

The numbers, per acre

  • NPK Consortia: 15 Ltr per crop x Rs 94 per Ltr = about Rs 1,410.
  • Typical chemical fertilizer spend for a heavy-feeding Brassica (urea, DAP, MOP): often in the range of Rs 6,000-9,000 per acre, depending on local rates and your soil test.
  • A 20-25% reduction in urea and DAP therefore frees up roughly Rs 1,200-2,000 per acre, so the programme broadly pays for itself on input cost before counting any quality benefit.

These are planning figures from list prices, not a guaranteed yield result. Use your own soil test and local fertilizer rates to confirm.

Three mistakes that waste the spend

Cutting chemical fertilizer too fast. Reduce 20-25% in season one, not 50%. Cauliflower is a heavy feeder, and boron and calcium deficiencies (hollow stem, buttoning, tip burn) are not fixed by biofertilizer. Keep your boron and calcium programme as it is.

Applying into dry soil or hot afternoon sun. Dose in the morning or evening, after irrigation.

Mixing with fungicides or strong acid fertilizers in one tank. Run biofertilizer on its own fertigation cycle.

Frequently asked questions

How much biofertilizer does one acre of cauliflower need?

5 litres of NPK Consortia per application, three applications (transplanting, day 25, day 45), so 15 litres per acre per crop.

Does cabbage respond to mycorrhiza VAM?

Generally no. Cabbage, cauliflower and other Brassicas are non-mycorrhizal, so use a bacterial NPK consortium on them and save mycorrhiza for the next crop.

What does it cost per acre?

About Rs 1,410 per acre per crop for NPK Consortia at Rs 94 per litre (Rs 4,699 per 50 Ltr drum).

Can I use it in drip irrigation?

Yes. Dilute in the fertigation tank and run during a normal irrigation cycle, without chlorine flushing or acidic fertilizers in the same cycle.

Will it fix hollow stem or buttoning?

No. Those are largely boron, calcium and temperature issues. Biofertilizer improves nutrient efficiency; it does not replace micronutrient correction.
