Why treat seed with biofertilizer at all?

Rabi sowing is under way across India. Most farmers already treat seed with a fungicide; far fewer add a biofertilizer step, even though it puts Azotobacter, phosphate-solubilizing and potash-mobilizing bacteria directly on the seed coat, where the first root hairs will meet them. The microbes then colonise the root zone from day one instead of competing with the soil's native population later.

Step-by-step: how to treat seed

1. Chemicals first, biologicals last. If you use a fungicide seed dressing, apply it first and let the seed dry. Wait at least 2–3 hours (overnight is safer) before adding any biofertilizer, because fungicides can kill the live bacteria on contact.
2. Mix the slurry. Per kg of seed, take 5 ml of NPK Consortia and add enough clean, chlorine-free water (about 10–20 ml) to wet the seed evenly. Add a little jaggery solution as a sticker if the seed coat is smooth.
3. Coat gently. Mix on a clean plastic sheet or in a drum until every seed is wet. Do not crush or abrade the seed.
4. Shade-dry for 20–30 minutes. Never dry in direct sun — UV and heat reduce the live count quickly.
5. Sow the same day. Treated seed should not sit for more than 24 hours. Sow into moist soil.
