Why banana is a special case

Banana is one of the heaviest feeders in Indian horticulture. A single acre yielding 25-30 tonnes removes a very large quantity of nitrogen and potassium from the soil, and growers routinely apply 200-300 kg of urea and 300-400 kg of MOP per acre per cycle to keep up. Two things follow from that.

First, banana has a shallow, fleshy root system with relatively few fine root hairs. It is poor at foraging for phosphorus on its own. This is exactly the gap that mycorrhizal fungi fill — the fungal hyphae extend the effective root surface many times over and reach phosphorus that the root itself never contacts.

Second, because so much soluble fertilizer goes in, banana soils tend to become biologically depleted and salt-loaded over successive cycles. The application schedule for banana

Apply into moist soil, never dry. Live microbes need soil moisture to establish. Apply immediately after irrigation, or dose through the drip during a normal irrigation event.
