Cumin is not like wheat or mustard. It is a shallow-rooted, 100–110 day crop grown on light sandy-loam soils in Gujarat (Mehsana, Banaskantha, Patan) and Rajasthan (Jodhpur, Barmer, Nagaur) — and it punishes excess nitrogen harder than almost any other Rabi crop. Why mycorrhiza matters more on cumin than on most crops

Cumin's root system is genuinely small — a feeding zone of roughly 15–20 cm in a soil where phosphorus is mostly fixed and unavailable. Mycorrhizal fungi (VAM) colonise those roots and extend a hyphal network well beyond the root hair zone, effectively enlarging the absorbing surface many times over. On a crop that cannot grow a big root system of its own, that is the single highest-leverage input you can add.

1. Field preparation (late October – early November)

Cumin needs a fine, well-pulverised seedbed on light soil. Apply 4–5 tonnes of well-decomposed FYM per acre during the last ploughing. Do not use fresh or half-rotted manure — it releases nitrogen late in the season, exactly when you do not want it, and carries weed seed.

2. At sowing (November, when night temperature settles around 20–22°C)

Mix 100 g of Mycorrhiza VAM powder with 20–25 kg of fine FYM, dry soil or sand and broadcast it in the seed line before covering, so the propagules sit in the zone the germinating radicle will pass through. VAM must be placed near the root — broadcasting it across the whole field surface wastes most of it.

Seed rate is 5–6 kg per acre. Sowing after the third week of November shortens the grain-fill window and typically costs yield; sowing too early, while daytime temperature is still above 30°C, gives poor germination.

3. First irrigation (immediately after sowing) and second (25–30 days)

At the second irrigation, apply 1 litre of NPK Consortia liquid biofertilizer per acre through drip or fertigation. For flood-irrigated fields, mix 1 litre into 100 kg of well-decomposed FYM, keep it in shade for 24 hours, then broadcast and irrigate.

  2. Applying at midday. Direct sunlight and soil temperature above 40°C will kill a large share of the population. Apply in the evening, or with irrigation water.
  3. Broadcasting VAM across the whole field. Mycorrhiza only works where it makes root contact. Seed-line placement or FYM-carrier mixing in the sowing furrow is non-negotiable.
