Is Your Liquid Biofertilizer Still Alive? Storage, Shelf Life and a 10-Minute Field Check (India 2026)
Short answer: a sealed 50 Ltr drum of liquid biofertilizer stays viable only if it is kept cool, shaded and upright, and used within the shelf life printed on the label. If a drum has sat in direct sun, in a hot godown, or opened for weeks, test it before you apply it. The check takes about 10 minutes and costs nothing.
Quotable rule: a biofertilizer is a living product, so heat and time cost you microbes before they cost you money.
Why storage matters more than most farmers think
Azotobacter, PSB, KMB and mycorrhiza are living organisms. A drum of Orgogrowth NPK Consortia at ₹4,699 per 50 Ltr (about ₹94 per litre) or Mycorrhiza VAM Liquid at ₹5,800 per 50 Ltr (about ₹116 per litre) is only worth that money if the microbes are alive when they reach the root zone. Under FCO 1985 (as amended), liquid biofertilizers are expected to carry a minimum viable count of about 10 to the power 8 cells per ml at manufacture. Counts fall as temperature and time rise, which is why the label date matters.
Simple arithmetic: if a ₹4,699 drum loses even one fifth of its useful activity to bad storage, you have wasted about ₹940 before applying a single litre.
The 6 storage rules
- Keep it cool and shaded. Store in a room or godown below roughly 30°C. Never leave drums on a tractor trolley, a terrace or a field bund in the sun.
- Keep it upright with the cap tight. Air entry invites contaminants that compete with the product strains.
- Keep it away from chemicals. Do not store next to pesticides, fungicides, copper products or fertilizer bags. Fumes and spills can harm the microbes.
- Check the date. Use before the expiry or best-before printed on the drum. Buy for the coming 1 to 2 applications, not for the whole year.
- Do not return unused liquid to the drum. Draw what you need with a clean mug and close the cap.
- Do not freeze it. Cold nights are fine, freezing is not.
The 10-minute field check
None of these tests is a lab count, but together they flag a drum that has clearly gone wrong.
- Look. Shake the drum well. Liquid consortia are usually slightly turbid or cloudy. A clear watery liquid with settled sludge, or visible mould floating on top, is a warning sign.
- Smell. A mild earthy or fermented smell is normal. A sharp rotten-egg or putrid smell is not. Do not apply that drum, and photograph it.
- Dilute test. Mix 100 ml in 10 litres of clean water. It should mix evenly with no stringy clumps or oily film.
- Compatibility check. If you plan to tank-mix, test a small jar first. Our compatibility chart lists what should be kept apart and how many days of gap to leave.
- Document. Note the batch number and date on the drum label. If something looks wrong, send the photo and batch number to us before you use it.
Which product, and when to buy
For general N-P-K support across crops, Orgogrowth NPK Consortia (50 Ltr) is the usual starting point. For phosphorus uptake and root development, especially in perennial and drought-prone crops, see Mycorrhiza VAM Liquid (50 Ltr). For cane growers, Sugarcane Special Consortia carries the same 50 Ltr, ₹4,699 pricing. Plan purchases close to your application date so the drum is fresh.
What about powder?
Water-soluble powder such as Mycorrhiza VAM Powder 1 Kg (6000 IP per gram, ₹2,499) is easier to store because it is dry, but it should still be kept sealed, cool and away from moisture. Once opened, use it within the season.
FAQ
How long does liquid biofertilizer last?
Follow the shelf life printed on the drum. Viability falls faster with heat, so a cool store is the single biggest factor.
Can I keep an opened drum for next season?
Not reliably. Once a drum is opened, plan to finish it within the same season, and run the 10-minute check before any later use.
Does a bad smell always mean the product is spoiled?
A mild earthy or fermented smell is normal for a living culture. A sharp putrid smell is not, so do not apply it and contact the seller.
Can I store biofertilizer in a fridge?
Cool is good, but a normal shaded room below 30°C is enough for most farmers. Avoid freezing.
Is Orgogrowth FCO compliant?
Our products are sold under FCO 1985 and carry ISO certification. Check the label of your drum for batch and date details.
