Biofertilizer for Groundnut (Peanut) in India 2026: Mycorrhiza Dose per Acre, Cost and the Rabi–Summer Schedule

Short answer: for groundnut (peanut), use Mycorrhiza VAM at sowing — 100 g of the 1 Kg powder (₹2,499, 6000 IP/gm) or 2–3 litres of the 50 Ltr liquid (₹5,800) per acre. That costs roughly ₹250 per acre with powder and ₹290–350 per acre with liquid. Groundnut fixes most of its own nitrogen through Rhizobium nodules, so phosphorus uptake and root reach are the biofertilizer levers that matter, not extra nitrogen.

Groundnut does not need more nitrogen from a bottle; it needs more phosphorus from the soil it already has — and that is what mycorrhiza delivers.

Why groundnut responds to mycorrhiza

Groundnut is a legume with a shallow, fine root system and a high phosphorus demand during flowering, pegging and pod fill. Much of the phosphorus applied as DAP or SSP becomes chemically fixed in the soil within weeks. Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (VAM) fungi colonise the root cortex and send hyphae 2–5 micrometres wide — far finer than a 10–15 micrometre root hair — several centimetres into the soil, reaching phosphorus and moisture the root cannot reach alone. Colonisation takes about 2–3 weeks, so it must go in at sowing, not at flowering.

Orgogrowth VAM powder is rated at 6000 infective propagules (IP) per gram; the liquid is specified at a minimum of 100 spores per 1200 IP/ml batch standard against the FCO 1985 minimum of 10, with 70%+ root colonisation targeted. Our formulation notes cite 30–50% better phosphorus uptake, and up to 30% less DAP in liquid-applied crops. Treat these as ranges, not guarantees: soil phosphorus status, moisture and fungicide use all change the result.

The rabi–summer schedule (per acre)

  • At sowing (day 0): coat seed with a VAM paste (100 g powder with a little water, enough for the seed of one acre) or drench the furrow with 2–3 L VAM liquid in 200 L water. Do this before any fungicide seed treatment is applied — keep a 7–10 day gap from Carbendazim or Mancozeb, which kill the fungus.
  • Phosphorus basal dose: keep your recommended SSP (it also supplies sulphur and some calcium), but get a soil test first. Where soil P is already medium-to-high, the VAM-supported plant can often take a reduced dose.
  • Rhizobium: keep your normal Rhizobium seed treatment. VAM and Rhizobium are complementary — VAM supports the phosphorus that nodulation itself depends on.
  • Pegging stage (about 40–45 days): apply gypsum as per local agriculture-university advice. Biofertilizer does not replace calcium, which groundnut pods absorb directly from the pegging zone.
  • Irrigation: keep soil moist after sowing. Spores need moisture to germinate; summer groundnut on drip responds best because the VAM can be run through the venturi in a slurry.

Do you also need NPK Consortia?

Usually less than for cereals. NPK Consortia (₹4,699 per 50 Ltr drum, about ₹94 per litre; Azotobacter, PSB and KMB at minimum 5×10⁸ cells/ml) is useful where potash mobilisation is a concern or the field is under a cereal rotation. For groundnut, the Azotobacter component adds little over Rhizobium, so most growers get better value putting the money into VAM first. If you want a single product covering phosphorus, potash and mycorrhiza, the NPK+VAM Consortia 50 Ltr drum (₹4,699) is the combined option.

Cost per acre at a glance

All prices include 5% GST with free Pan-India delivery. Compare that with a typical DAP or SSP bill of several thousand rupees per acre: if VAM lets you trim even a fraction of the phosphate dose, the ₹250–350 pays for itself, but we recommend trimming only after a soil test and on a small block first.

Common mistakes

  • Applying VAM at flowering instead of sowing.
  • Mixing VAM with a fungicide in the same tank or seed treatment.
  • Expecting VAM to replace gypsum, sulphur or Rhizobium.
  • Applying to dry soil with no irrigation for a week.

FAQ

What is the mycorrhiza dose for groundnut per acre?
100 g of VAM powder (6000 IP/gm) or 2–3 litres of VAM liquid per acre, applied at sowing.

How much does it cost per acre?
About ₹250 with the powder and ₹232–348 with the liquid, including 5% GST.

Can I use it with Rhizobium?
Yes. They work together; VAM helps phosphorus uptake that supports nodulation.

Can I mix VAM with fungicide?
No. Keep a 7–10 day gap from chemical fungicides such as Carbendazim or Mancozeb.

Is it FCO compliant?
Yes — FCO 1985 compliant and made in an ISO 9001:2015 certified unit in Mehsana, Gujarat.

Orgogrowth India — manufacturer of FCO 1985 compliant biofertilizers since 2016. Always follow your state agriculture university's crop recommendations and do a soil test before changing fertilizer doses.
